crypt.jpg (196526 bytes)Crypt of Shadows, Vol. 1, No. 1, Jan., 1973. At the end of 1972 and beginning of 1973 Marvel was flooding the newstands with titles. Competition from DC was fierce and both companies were fighting for market share. The Crypt of Shadows was another of Marvel's reprint titles. Art in this issue by Mort Lawrence, Basil Wolverton, Jay Scott Pike, and Russ Heath.
beware.jpg (194924 bytes)Beware!, Vol. 1, No. 1, Mar., 1973. The Marvel Beware! was actually the 3rd version of this title. The original Beware was published by Youthful Magazines in 1952. The second version was published by Trojan Magazines from 1953 to 1955. The Trojan Beware, like the original Chamber of Chills had extremely violent content and was used as an example by Dr. Wertham in Seduction of the Innocent: "Childrem are first shocked and then desensitized by all this brutality." The Marvel Beware! was much tamer, using reprints, again, from old Atlas titles like Mystical Tales.
nurse.jpg (187585 bytes)Night Nurse, Vol. 1, No. 1, Nov, 1972. Young girls were never comic book readers, but that didn't stop comic book publishers from trying to sell to them. Night Nurse, like most "girl-oriented" titles didn't last and ceased publication with issue #4. Jean Thomas was the writer, and Winslow Mortimer the artist.
